Tottenham transfer news: English rivals prepare offer for ‘superstar’ target

AFC Bournemouth are reportedly preparing an opening offer to sign Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie, who has long been viewed as a target for Tottenham.

According to CalcioMercato, the Cherries will soon make their first bid for McKennie having made contact with Juventus to sign the American international, with Bournemouth eager to add to their midfield in the January transfer window this month.

The move and the update will come as a surprise to Tottenham, with the north London side being linked with McKennie for many months and seemingly being viewed by the majority as the favourites to sign the 24-year-old USA dynamo.

Labelled as a ‘superstar’ by Fabio Paratici, McKennie impressed at the 2022 FIFA World Cup as America made it to the last 16 before being eliminated by the Netherlands. And as a result, the midfielder is now extremely likely to depart Juventus this month, with Bournemouth now leading the race.

Indeed, given the Cherries’ position in the Premier League standings, Bournemouth signing McKennie ahead of the likes of Tottenham would be quite the shock, especially given that Gary O’Neil’s side are one of the favourites to get relegated this season.

However, from Juventus’ point of view, just finding a buyer will be enough to please the Serie A side in regards to a deal for McKennie, yet for Tottenham, losing out on the midfielder to Bournemouth of all clubs will feel like an embarrassing sucker punch for Antonio Conte.

Tottenham can’t allow McKennie to sign for Bournemouth

Tottenham have been linked with a move for McKennie for the best part of 18 months, with the Juventus star being a part of the Spurs rumour mill for what feels like forever with everything seemingly leading up to this transfer window. Which is why Bournemouth winning the race would come as a shock to many.

As we know, the south coast Premier League side are one of the favourites to get relegated this season, and Tottenham losing out on a major transfer target to Bournemouth would be viewed by many Spurs supporters as an embarrassing transfer loss.
