Everton have dealt Tottenham Hotspur a ruinous blow to their plan to target the transfer of Jordan Pickford. The goalkeeper has now put pen to paper on a new contract to June 2027.

The Toffees announced on Friday morning that Pickford had signed a new four-and-a-half-year deal at Goodison Park. He also stated that his decision to pen new terms was ‘to build a legacy here’. The 28-year-old’s extension can take him up to one decade on Merseyside.

Pickford moved to Everton from Sunderland in a £25m, rising up to £30m, transfer back in June 2017. The goalkeeper left the Stadium of Light following the Black Cats’ relegation to the Championship. He has since become a Premier League mainstay and is England’s No1.

Tottenham had hoped that Everton enduring relegation from the Premier League this term may open a door for Pickford’s transfer. Ben Jacobs reported earlier this month that Spurs and Chelsea were showing intent interest in his services ‘especially’ if the Toffees go down.

Everton sit just a point above the relegation zone after 23 games so far this season in 16th place. The Toffees are also only three points off the bottom of the table following just five wins all term. No top-flight team has also scored fewer goals than the Goodison side’s 17.

Everton have dealt Tottenham a ruinous transfer blow with Pickford’s new contract

Tottenham have also put plans in place in anticipation of targeting Pickford’s transfer from Everton this summer. The Sun reported back in January that Spurs managing director Fabio Paratici and his Manchester United counterparts were prepared to pay him £200k-a-week.

Yet Everton have dealt Tottenham a ruinous blow over their hopes of Pickford’s transfer in the event of their relegation with his new contract. The Sun now reports that there is not a release clause in his terms worth £150k-a-week. Nor will his pay go down if they go down.

Goodison chiefs did not ask Pickford, whom Tottenham star Eric Dier has called ‘incredible’ to agree to a clause to reduce his salary in the event of relegation. Falling into the second-tier would be catastrophic for their finances. Yet Everton are fully committed to Pickford.
