Tottenham Hotspur looked into appointing Sergio Conceicao before landing Antonio Conte – and he is achieving great things at Porto.
Tottenham decided to axe Nuno Espirito Santo back in November and managed to secure Conte in a blockbuster move.
It seems that Tottenham did have other options on their radar before landing Conte though, as you would expect.
The Telegraph and Daily Mail noted that Tottenham were keen on Sergio Conceicao and considered a move for the Porto boss.
Conte was understandably the first choice and you can hardly blame Tottenham for avoiding another Portuguese boss.
The optics of appointing another Portuguese coach after Jose Mourinho and Nuno wouldn’t have been great, so Conte was the choice.
Conceicao missed out on the Tottenham job but he is now doing great things over at Porto.
Porto sit six points clear at the top of the table and look set to snatch the title back from Sporting.
After beating Vitoria 1-0 on Sunday, Porto have now set the record for consecutive games without a defeat, moving on to 57.
That’s a quite staggering run for Porto, who now haven’t lost a single league game since a 3-2 defeat to Pacos de Ferreira in October 2020.
Porto are on course for an invincible season under Conceicao, and if they can accomplish that, two years unbeaten will be the next target.
Tottenham will of course be very happy to have landed Conte but this kind of record from Conceicao is hard to ignore.
A number of other Premier League clubs will surely be keeping tabs on Conceicao, and maybe Tottenham will keep an eye on him just in case Conte leaves any time soon.
For now though, Conceicao will just be focused on racking up the games without defeat as he closes in on 60 unbeaten games.
