Tottenham now want to bring Pedro Goncalves to the Premier League – a player who was sold by Wolves in 2019.
What’s the story?
Well – according to 90min – Spurs were impressed by the Portugal international’s performances for Sporting Lisbon while scouting Pedro Porro.
Tottenham have continued to monitor Goncalves even after wrapping up a £39m deal for Porro.
90min add that Spurs have been joined by the likes of Aston Villa, Liverpool and Newcastle in scouting the 24-year-old.
However, the north Londoners are believed to be showing the most interest in Goncalves.
The Sporting Lisbon No.28 looks set to become the next gem to emerge from Portuguese football after Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Bruno Fernandes – his agent, Jorge Pires, has already called him a “new” version of the latter.
Goncalves has impressively scored 18 goals while also providing 12 assists in just 42 appearances this season.
You may recall the Chaves-born attacker scoring from the halfway line in a recent Europa League win over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, which should already make him quite popular amongst Tottenham fans.
Tottenham need someone like Pedro Goncalves
In our view, Goncalves is exactly the type of player Spurs need – they don’t really have anyone like him.
The Portuguese maestro is a similar player to Bernardo Silva and Martin Ødegaard, as he tends to float around in a number of attacking areas behind the striker before popping up with a decisive moment.
In Tottenham’s case, their midfield is a bit more industrious in the likes of Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and Oliver Skipp, who are both hard workers defensively, but lack creative guile going forward.
Ultimately, it will come down to who Daniel Levy opts to replace Antonio Conte with – for example, there wasn’t really a No.10 role for someone like Goncalves in the Italian’s system.
Nevertheless, if there is even a glimmer of a chance for Tottenham to sign Goncalves this summer under the right manager, they have to take it.
