Tottenham have reportedly added Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus to their summer shortlist. A player, that Jermaine Jenas urged Spurs to sign back in 2019, when talking to BBC’s Football Focus programme.

Jesus, 25, has scored 13 goals in 40 appearances at Manchester City – while also laying on 12 assists this term. The Brazil international has been superb once again for City, but his contract is due to expire in 12 months’ time.

Football London claim Jesus is now a target for Spurs – while a prior report from the same outlet says Arsenal are readying a £35m bid. Antonio Conte is likely to go after a striker to act as back-up, and cover, to Harry Kane.

Back in 2019, ex-Tottenham midfielder Jenas highlighted the need for a striker to act as top-class cover for Kane – and he said Spurs need a striker like Jesus at City. Now, Spurs want to sign the former Palmeiras ace.

“They’re one player away. That one player is very difficult to find. Gabriel Jesus went to City as a very young, very big prospect. That’s what they need to find, prepared to sit underneath Kane, but he’s going to be a big one.”

Jenas urged Tottenham to sign Jesus in 2019: Brilliant signing…

Jesus would be a stunning addition. Tottenham are a brilliant signing for Spurs, but it seems unlikely for two reasons. The first, being Arsenal are interested and the second, Arsenal will not make Jesus a back-up.

Kane looks more than likely to remain at Tottenham with Manchester City signing Erling Haaland. Would Jesus join Spurs to be back-up? Even if they are in the Champions League? Doubtful. At Arsenal, he is the main man.
