Tottenham pushed hard to sign Paulo Dybala during the summer transfer window, with Antonio Conte determined to land the Argentine.
That was according to Tutto Mercato Web, although José Mourinho eventually managed to convince the South American to ignore the Premier League and join him at Roma.
Dybala has got off to a blistering start in Rome, scoring seven goals in his first 12 games.
However, Roma’s form has dipped in recent weeks, and now a surprising rumour has emerged which could make Conte’s eyes light up.
Tottenham have golden chance to sign Dybala
Well, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, the Argentina international actually negotiated a €20m (£18m) release clause into his contract when joining Roma, to ensure he can stay in control of his future.
The Italian news outlet add that regular Champions League football is a must for Dybala, and with Roma currently sitting seventh in Serie A – recording just one win from their last five games – that is far from a certainty in 2023.
Of course, the Italian giants are only three points off the top four, although the usual Mourinho decline appears to be happening once again.
The 59-year-old is struggling to pick up positive results, and has fallen out with Rick Karsdorp, telling the Swede to leave Roma in January.
Tammy Abraham is also being booed by the Roma fans as things turn slightly toxic under Mourinho once again, so we wouldn’t be surprised to see Dybala invite clubs to trigger his release clause in 2023.

If this rumour is true, and Dybala really is available for just £18m in 2023, Spurs have to act.
The 29-year-old is a superb talent, who has the ability to change a game with one flash of brilliance.
Furthermore, Richarlison has not lived up to expectations yet following his £60m move from Everton, failing to score in ten Premier League appearances so far.
Therefore, another striker wouldn’t go amiss to help Harry Kane and Heung-min Son, especially someone of Dybala’s quality.
