Tottenham have held an interest in signing Pau Torres from Villarreal for many years now.
Spurs first made a move for the Spain international in 2021, and actually agreed a £46m deal with Villarreal for the towering defender, according to AS in Spain.
However, Torres himself rejected a move to Tottenham as Villarreal – his boyhood club – had just qualified for the Champions League.
The Spaniard told MARCA: “I was informed of Tottenham’s interest, but I was clear from the first moment what I wanted, and so I decided calmly. I decided that the best thing for me was to continue at Villarreal.”
While that was surely a kick in the teeth for Spurs, the north Londoners now have a golden chance to finally sign Torres – who Unai Emery has described as an “amazing” player.
What’s the story?
Well, Roig Negueroles – Chief Executive Officer of Villarreal – has now revealed that the Spanish outfit are having financial problems.
The 48-year-old told AS: “We are a team that is in a situation that we have to improve, it’s not a complicated situation, but it does force us to make some adjustments.

“We are a little above our means, so we are obliged to adjust salaries and costs to our reality. What we don’t want is to have to sell by obligation or to be suffering from a similar situation, what we want is to try to balance the situation sooner.”
Now, while it doesn’t sound as if a fire sale is needed at the Estadio de la Cerámica just yet, it seems Villarreal could certainly do with making a significant sale.
The timing is just right for Antonio Conte at Tottenham.
Tottenham must bid for Pau Torres
According to The Times, the Italian wants a new central defender as he struggles to get anywhere with the likes of Clement Lenglet and Davinson Sanchez.
Furthermore, Torres only has 18 months remaining on his contract at Villarreal, which expires in June 2024.
Therefore, it would be wise for Villarreal to cash in on the 25-year-old this month, as his value will surely decrease significantly come the summer transfer window, when he will enter the final 12 months of his contract.
Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as we wouldn’t be surprised to see Tottenham make another move for Torres – according to 90min, they are still interested.
