Tottenham legend Teddy Sheringham has backed Arsenal to claim the fourth and final UEFA Champions League spot in the Premier League despite Spurs’ 5-0 win against Everton.
Speaking on Monday Night Football, the ex-Spurs hero claimed that Mikel Arteta’s side are the current favourites to finish in the top four, with Arsenal climbing into the position for the first time in months this weekend after their win against Watford.
With Manchester United being torn apart by Manchester City on Sunday and West Ham starting to wobble, fourth spot looks set to be contested between Tottenham and Arsenal, who are set to play each other later on in the season.
Although Arsenal occupy fourth spot, the Gunners have one of the hardest run-ins out of any of the top clubs in the Premier League, with the north London side still needing to play the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea and travel to the likes of Aston Villa and Southampton.
Indeed, top-four is set to go right down to the wire this season between Arsenal and Tottenham, yet for Sheringham, his former rivals are his current favourites to claim the Champions League spot come to the end of the campaign in May.
Sheringham said: “It’s there for the taking. I think it’s a big end to the season for Tottenham, they’re in the mix, but then so are West Ham, Manchester United and Arsenal. They will all be vying for that, and you’ve got to say Arsenal are firm favourites to get the fourth spot, at the moment, especially with their form.”
Pressure is now on Arsenal to maintain Champions League spot
The Gunners stand in an incredible position to finish fourth following one of the club’s best seasons in recent memory, yet for Arteta’s young Arsenal squad, the pressure will be on to maintain the Champions League spot with fixtures coming thick and fast.
Tottenham have regained form under Antonio Conte, and whilst Spurs legends like Sheringham are tipping Arsenal for a fourth-place finish, the Gunners can’t allow this to get into their heads as we approach the final stages of the season.
