Football really does move fast. Just ask Tottenham Hotspur talisman Harry Kane – from England’s darling to yesterday’s man in the space of eight days. And if there’s one man who knows how the struggling striker feels, it’s Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte.
This time last year, the £57 million defender was one of the first names on City’s star-studded team sheet, his near-faultless performances causing Pep Guardiola to label him the “best in the world” in his position.
Less than 12 months later, Ruben Dias has stolen Laporte’s thunder, John Stones has stolen his place and, after being swatted aside like a dazed bluebottle as Robert Lewandowski stunned Spain on Saturday, Laporte now faces a fight to keep his Man City career alive.
Kane out, Laporte in at Tottenham?
According to all-seeing, all-knowing Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Premier League champions have offered Laporte to Tottenham as part of a £100 million player-plus-cash deal that would see Kane go in the other direction.

And the reaction from City supporters certainly makes interesting reading.
Has their judgement been clouded by Kane’s anonymous displays at Euro 2020?
Or are the Man City fans really that passionate about a defender who started just 41 per cent of their Premier League and Champions League fixtures in 2020/21?
Guardiola may not value Laporte quite as highly as before. But it appears the defender still has plenty of admirers on the blue half of Manchester.
Here’s what some Man City fans on Twitter had to say about the mooted swap deal:
