Tottenham are in a four-way race to sign Brighton midfielder Alexis MacAllister as the Argentine continues to sparkle for his country at the Qatar World Cup – just days after he blew Sergio Aguero away after his outing against Mexico.

MacAllister, 23, has become one of Argentina’s most-important players at the World Cup. An unused sub against Saudi Arabia which saw Argentina lose 2-1, the Brighton midfielder has since started Argentina’s next four games in Qatar.

Wins over Poland and Mexico in the group stages, and then Australia and The Netherlands on penalties. Indeed, he completed the entire 120 minutes against The Netherlands. While he did not take a penalty, he was excellent.

Italian outlet and Inter Milan account L’Interista claim that the Nerazzurri have been joined by Spurs, Juventus and Atletico Madrid in the race to sign the Premier League no.10. Aguero gave his verdict on ESPN earlier this month.

“He’s a very intelligent player. He positions himself, waits his moment. Against Mexico we didn’t see what he could do but he was always on his own,” Aguero told ESPN following the win over Mexico, as quoted by The Argus.

MacAllister is just what Spurs need. Antonio Conte needs an attacking midfielder. One that can create chances for Harry Kane rather than the England skipper having to do it all himself. MacAllister would do that for Tottenham.

Not just that, but he would give Spurs a real threat from set-pieces. Gary Lineker described him as “sumptuous” from dead-ball opportunities. Whether Brighton would be open to his exit in January remains to be seen.

The Brighton ace has a contract until June 2025 meaning the Seagulls are under no pressure to sell. But, if they are willing to cash in, his price tag is likely to be a big one – especially after starring for Argentina on the biggest stage.
