Tottenham Hotspur are expected to outbid Premier League rivals West Ham United as the battle to sign Sao Paulo star Igor Gomes heats up, as reported by French publication Homme du Match.

With little more than a fortnight remaining in the transfer market, a trend appears to be emerging in N17.

In the space of 24 hours, Tottenham have been linked with a handful of highly talented midfielders who have one thing in common – Joao Palhinha, Yacine Adli, Sander Berge and Igor Gomes are all very effective when it comes to picking up possession and driving through the lines with the ball at their feet.

If reports are to be believed, Spurs have launched £17 million bids for Palhinha and Berge.

Igor Gomes might not be quite so familiar – he didn’t feature at Euro 2020 like Palhinha and hasn’t played Premier League football like Berge – but the Brazil U23 international will become a household name soon enough, and not just in north London.

Tottenham muscle in on Igor Gomes

Nicknamed ‘the new Kaka’, Gomes is a joy to watch when sliding, slaloming and scything his way through a forest of legs while maintaining the sort of balance and poise that conjures up memories of the former AC Milan superstar in full flow.

Gomes has been heavily linked with West Ham of late but, according to Homme du Match, Spurs are expected to put forward an offer greater than the £9 million bid submitted by David Moyes.

Sao Paulo may be inclined to accept, too.

Because, as we reported last week, Sao Paulo can’t bring in any players of their own until they find £7 million to fill a financial hole.

Selling Gomes would do just that.
