Sander Berge is still holding out for a return to the Premier League but Tottenham Hotspur have failed to twist Sheffield United’s arm with a bid of £17 million, as reported by Homme du Match.

Who would have thought that George Baldock, Aaron Ramsdale and former Champions League play-maker Sander Berge would still be plying their trade at Bramall Lane with just two weeks of the transfer window remaining?

Celtic have been priced out of a deal for Baldock, Arsenal will not pay the £30 million required for Ramsdale and, with Sheffield United refusing to budge, Norway international Berge could soon be gearing himself up for midweek clashes with Preston North End, Middlesbrough and Millwall.

Not that he is too excited about the prospect of that.

The former Genk ace had been linked with the likes of Arsenal, West Ham and Aston Villa earlier in the summer.

Liverpool, meanwhile, were reported to hold an interest in a player who impressed Jurgen Klopp during a Champions League clash between the Reds and Genk in late-2019.

As it stands, however, the only active interest appears to be coming from Tottenham. The London giants have failed with an opening bid of £17 million and it remains to be seen whether they are willing to meet Sheffield United’s demands for a player valued closer to £22 million.

Berge, a 6ft 4ins powerhouse capable of turning defence into attack with one of those trademark bursts of acceleration, could be the perfect foil for the more defensively-minded Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg at the heart of Tottenham’s midfield.

He would certainly add plenty of muscle, while offering the sort of ball-carrying ability that Harry Winks and the technically-limited Moussa Sissoko cannot match.

“He’s a Rolls Royce,” Sheffield United teammate Rhian Brewster said of Berge recently, via Sky.

Rumours of a bid from North London will raise further questions about the increasingly uncertain future of Tanguy Ndombele, left out by Nuno Espirito Santo during Sunday’s 1-0 friendly victory over Arsenal.
