One Tottenham star seriously impressed on international duty this week with his nation’s media quick to praise his performance.

After narrowly missing out on Champions League qualification last season, Tottenham players turned their attention towards their international duties with four players called up to compete in Euro 2024.

Rodrigo Bentancur, Giovani Lo Celso and Cristian Romero also jetted off to compete in this summer’s Copa America for Uruguay and Argentina respectively.

After opening their tournament with a 2-0 win over Canada, Argentina were back in action during the early hours of Wednesday morning against Chile.

Both Lo Celso and Romero played a part in the 1-0 win that saw the reigning champions stay at the top of Group A.

Lo Celso came off the bench in the second half in place of Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez, while Romero played the full match in the heart of defence.

Argentine media reacts to Cristian Romero at Copa America

After a strong performance against Canada in Argentina‘s opener, Romero kept his spot in defence alongside Manchester United’s Lisandro Martinez.

Both centre-backs played on the front foot and, as they have shown in the Premier League, they did not shy away from physical duels and challenges.

Argentine outlet TyC Sports heaped praise on Romero for his performance accompanied by a match-topping rating of eight out of 10.

They added: “Another outstanding performance from the best central marker of the moment. It is more than respect what he imposes on the rival. A beast.”

Cristian Romero at Tottenham next season

Romero was a mainstay in Ange Postecoglou’s side last season – he made 34 appearances across all competitions and his longest time away from the starting lineup came because of the three-match suspension received after his red card against Chelsea.

The 26-year-old has formed a formidable relationship with Micky van de Ven and has grown into a leader for this Spurs side, even wearing the captain’s armband on occasion last season.

A strong run of form with Argentina this summer should fill Romero with confidence so that he is ready to hit the ground running when he returns to North London.

Spurs will set their sights on Champions League qualification next year and a solid defence with Romero at its heart will be essential to reaching that target.
