Tottenham Hotspur have been chasing a surprise move for Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat – but the pursuit now appears to be off.

Amrabat emerged as a shock target for Tottenham last week with Antonio Conte keen to add a new midfielder.

The Moroccan excelled at Hellas Verona but has struggled since making a 2020 move to Fiorentina.

That doesn’t exactly smack of becoming a Tottenham star, but Spurs were still pressing ahead with a move for Amrabat.

Calciomercato claimed just a matter of days ago that Amrabat was one step away from joining Tottenham on loan with an option to buy for £12.5million.

What’s interesting though is that Conte has actually targeted Amrabat before, seeking to sign him for Inter Milan back in 2019.

Additionally, Jose Mourinho allegedly wanted Amrabat to join Tottenham around a similar time having been impressed with his displays at Verona.

Fast forward more than two years and Amrabat appeared to have the chance to finally join Tottenham and work with Conte in one fell swoop.

However, Tottenham are now pressing ahead with a move to sign Juventus ace Rodrigo Bentancur instead.

According to SportItalia’s Alfredo Pedulla, Tottenham have scrapped talks with Fiorentina to sign Amrabat and the deal won’t be happening.

Branded an ‘absolute champion’ by former teammate German Pezzella, Amrabat has shown glimpses of his quality in Italy but now faces staying in a tricky position with Fiorentina.

Currently away at the Africa Cup of Nations with Morocco, Amrabat will now return to still being a fringe player at Fiorentina rather than heading to the Premier League with Tottenham.

That’s not what Amrabat will have been hoping for last week, given that he was being given a rather lofty escape route out of Florence.

Conte may still hold an interest in Amrabat moving forward, but it looks to be Bentancur heading to North London instead.
