Glenn Hoddle has said on Amazon Prime Video (9:11pm, December 2, 2021) that he is not convinced by Tottenham Hotspur right-back Emerson Royal yet.
The Tottenham legend made the comments about Emerson after watching him in action against Brentford at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Thursday evening.
Antonio Conte’s side won the Premier League match 2-0.
Tottenham legend Hoddle was on co-commentary duty for the London derby on Amazon Prime Video.
Hoddle said in the 83rd minute about Emerson: “I think the jury’s still out of him, in my opinion. Little bit of good defending and a little bit of good attacking, not totally convinced at this moment in time. I think that the wing-back role will suit him a little bit more.”
Staying patient with Emerson Royal
In our opinion, Tottenham fans should be patient with Emerson Royal.
Remember, the Brazil international joined Spurs from Barcelona in the summer of 2021 for €30 million (£25.51m) (BBC Sport).
And he is only 22.
Emerson is still a very young defender who is developing and progressing as a footballer.
Tottenham head coach Conte likes to play with three at the back.
This means that Emerson will be used as a wing-back.
That, as Hoddle says, could suit the Spurs youngster.
The Tottenham no. 12 has made nine starts and one substitute appearance in the Premier League so far this season.
Emerson has also played thrice in the Europa Conference League and once in the Carabao Cup for Spurs this campaign.
