Everton wanted to sign Tottenham Hotspur right-back Emerson Royal when he was at Atletico Mineiro, according to The Athletic.

Everton wanted Tottenham’s Emerson Royal

The report has claimed that the then recruitment team of Marcel Brands looked into possibility of signing the 23-year-old Tottenham right-back for Everton when he was playing in his native Brazil for Clube Atletico Mineiro.

Brands was then working as the director of football at Merseyside club Everton.

Emerson moved to Barcelona in 2019 and joined Tottenham in the summer of 2021 for £25.8 million (BBC Sport).

Mediocre campaign

In our opinion, Emerson has not been a great hit at Tottenham this season, especially under head coach Antonio Conte.

Conte plays with right-backs, and the 23-year-old is still learning that role.

We cannot be too harsh on him, though.

After all, it does take a while to understand a new role in football.

Emerson is still only 23, and we think that there is time for him to master the art of playing as a right wing-back role and grow into it.

The Tottenham no. 12 has made 17 starts and five substitute appearances in the Premier League so far this season.

Emerson has provided one assist in those games.
