Tottenham want Djed Spence and Middlesbrough need to sell him in order to pull off a deal for Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle.

Tottenham have enjoyed a productive start to the window with a new goalkeeper, left wing back, midfielder and versatile attacker all signed.

Antonio Conte is desperate for another right wing back to be brought in though, even with Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty still at the club.

Whilst a number of different names have been suggested, there can be no doubting who Tottenham’s top target is – Middlesbrough’s Spence.

Tottenham want Djed Spence

Unwanted at Middlesbrough last year under Neil Warnock, Spence went on loan to Nottingham Forest and won promotion.

Spence has subsequently been linked with Tottenham for weeks, months even at this point.

The deal has been on and off, stalling and accelerating, so many false dawns.

Last week, it was reported that Tottenham were hoping to have a deal agreed for Spence quickly, but that hasn’t happened.

Tottenham remain keen on signing Spence given that he fit their demands perfectly.

Quick and exciting going forward whilst also qualifying as a homegrown player, Spence fits the bill for Tottenham.

A deal isn’t in place yet but Boro actually need to make this sale happen in order to push for their own incoming business.

The Daily Star (07/07, p43) report that Middlesbrough want to sign Newcastle striker Dwight Gayle, who is surplus to requirements at St James’ Park.

However, Boro can’t actually strike a deal for Gayle until Spence is sold to Tottenham.

Boro need to bring in the cash for Gayle’s arrival, with a fee and wages hardly coming cheap to a Championship club.

With Watford also interested, Boro may feel under some pressure to get the deal done – and finding an agreement with Tottenham over Spence is now paramount.

Hailed as ‘unbelievable’ by former Boro man Sol Bamba, Spence holds the key to Chris Wilder’s incoming business and Boro will be desperate to get a deal with Tottenham sorted out soon.
