Tottenham Hotspur are set to sign Djed Spence with the Middlesbrough right back set to undergo a medical inside the next 48 hours.

Tottenham went into the window wanting new wing backs on either side in order to play Antonio Conte’s 3-4-3 system perfectly.

Ivan Perisic has arrived to play on the left side but Tottenham’s pursuit of a right-sided wing back has been a little more drawn-out.

Djed Spence has been the top target for that role throughout the summer but there have been many false dawns in terms of a deal being done.

Finally though, it looks like Tottenham have got their man with Spence now North London-bound.

Tottenham Hotspur are set to sign Djed Spence

The Athletic’s David Ornstein reports that Tottenham are on the verge of a ‘total agreement’ with Middlesbrough for Spence’s signature.

There has been a breakthrough in talks between Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy and Middlesbrough chief Steve Gibson, with Spence’s agent Scott Smith helping the process.

Spence is now set for a medical in the next 48 hours barring any unforeseen problems.

The Telegraph add that Tottenham will be paying £15million rising to £20million with add-ons for Spence.

Spence, 21, wasn’t in Boro’s plans at the end of last summer’s transfer window and he was loaned out to Nottingham Forest as a result.

Spence enjoyed an outstanding season with Forest, providing a major threat up the right flank whilst helping them win promotion to the Premier League.

Branded ‘unbelievable’ by ex-Boro ace Sol Bamba, Spence earned huge praise for his displays last term.

Tottenham have made Spence their top target given his potential and attacking ability, whilst his status as a homegrown player is very appealing too.

It seems unlikely that Tottenham will now have Spence, Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal competing for just one spot in Conte’s side.

One of Doherty or Emerson will surely be on their way out this summer now, paving the way for Spence to become a Tottenham star after this long-awaited breakthrough.
