Some Tottenham Hotspur fans are eager to see Mauricio Pochettino sign Jermain Defoe from Sunderland.

Only back in January, Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino revealed that Jermain Defoe asked to train back at White Hart Lane in 2014, when he was an FC Toronto player.

Defoe wanted to keep his fitness up during the MLS close season, and turned to Spurs to help him remain in shape.

At that stage, Pochettino admitted that there was no way Spurs were going to sign him, but his comments from earlier in the year prove he has been impressed by the veteran forward’s performance at Sunderland in recent times.

“When he was back from Toronto, he asked to train here to keep his fitness,” he said to The Sun.

“That moment wasn’t a situation to consider signing him — then he moved to Sunderland and now he’s doing a fantastic job.

“He’s a very good striker with lots of experience and great movement. The ball may well be too far from his position but he is involved and is clever, he is ready to run forward.

Tottenham fans have also had their eye caught by Defoe’s resurgence at this late stage of his career.

The striker may now be 34, but he appears to be as deadly as ever.

And some Tottenham fans have been asking for Mauricio Pochettino to make a move to snap up Defoe in the summer recently (HITC).

Defoe could be available for free at the end of the season, if Sunderland are relegated.

Although Spurs have generally targeted youth in the transfer window, there may be a temptation to snap up Defoe – given he could guarantee goals.

Tottenham have struggled to find a striker to cover for Harry Kane, but Defoe would be a proven option.

Defoe has been away with England this week, and he scored for the Three Lions in their 2-0 victory over Lithuania on Sunday.
