England coasted to a 2-0 home win over Lithuania on Sunday evening, strengthening their push for a place at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The Three Lions had been beaten 1-0 in Germany last week, but after that friendly in Dortmund, it was back to Wembley for Gareth Southgate’s men, with three points up for grabs.

England were expected to hammer Lithuania, and whilst it wasn’t a thrashing, it was a comfortable win, sparked by Jermain Defoe’s close-range finish from Raheem Sterling’s run and cross.

Leicester’s Jamie Vardy completed the win with England’s second after the break, with a spot at the next World Cup edging ever closer.

After the final whistle, midfielder Dele Alli – who started both games against Germany and Lithuania – took to Twitter to not only celebrate a good win and a promising week, but also congratulate team-mate Defoe.

The 34-year-old striker marked his long-awaited recall to the England setup by scoring the opening goal, having enjoyed another prolific Premier League campaign with Sunderland.

Alli posted a picture of himself with Defoe during the match, congratulating him on his goal as he bids to convince Southgate that he’s worth a place at the World Cup despite his advancing years.

Tottenham ace Alli was then sent a number of messages from Spurs fans who are keen to see Defoe re-join the club for a third spell this summer, urging Alli to ‘bring Defoe home’ to North London.

Others noted that they would like to see Defoe offering competition for Harry Kane in attack, with one fan even claiming it was one of Tottenham’s worst ever decisions to sell Defoe to Toronto in 2014.
