Tottenham Hotspur’s search for a new centre-back has reportedly led them back to a former target in the shape of Pau Torres.
Indeed, according to Alasdair Gold, Pau Torres is the next name on Spurs’ shortlist of targets, and the Spanish defender could well end up in the Premier League.
There’s something of an element of unknown about Torres. After all, he’s never played in English football, but this week we received some insight into the player from Luis Enrique.
The Spain boss actually compared Torres to Leeds’ Diego Llorente, stating that they’re two players of similar ability.
“I know a lot about football and he comes [to the Spain squad] because he is amongst the best. He has played with continuity. Him as much as Pau [Torres],” Enrique said, via Football Espana.
Enrique says that Llorente is just as good as Torres, and that’s a rather worrying verdict from a Tottenham point of view.
With all due respect to Llorente, he isn’t a world-beater. He’s just narrowly avoided relegation with Leeds, and he’s actually been heavily criticised along the way.
Now, a player with Llorente’s quality is good enough for a team like Leeds, but Spurs need someone who is a few levels higher in terms of quality.
Of course, Enrique could have just been saying this about Torres and Llorente in order to boost the Leeds man’s confidence, but if he genuinely believes that these two are on the same level, Spurs may want to steer clear of Torres.
Tottenham need someone who will be a cut above in the Premier League, and if Torres is only as good as Llorente, he won’t fit that bill.
