Tottenham Hotspur are hoping to add some depth to Ange Postecoglou’s defence but the Premier League giants have seen an opening bid of £3 million rejected by Club America for Sebastian Caceres.
Successive defeats in the space of just five days – not to mention the sudden absences of Cristian Romero, Destiny Udogie, James Maddison and Micky van de Ven – are certainly doing little to displl the notion that the so-called ‘Manager of the Month curse’ is merely a figment of our imagination.
Almost everything that could have gone wrong did go wrong for Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham Hotspur last week. And that includes seeing an opening bid for Uruguay international Sebastian Caceres batted away.

Tottenham Hotspur make Sebastian Caceres bid
“Club America rejected Tottenham’s offer for Sebastian Caceres,” reporter Fernando Esquivel writes on X. “It can be known that the offer was around £3 million.”
Club America, Esquivel adds, want a minimum of £4.3 million, and may yet hold out for £6 million. That, of course, is still a potential bargain of a fee for a 24-year-old centre-half now hitting his stride, and establishing himself as a key part of the Uruguayan national team under their living legend of a head coach Marcelo Bielsa.
Caceres, available on the cheap as his contract expires in just 12 months’ time, was superb in Uruguay’s recent 2-0 World Cup qualifier victory over Brazil.
“The English side (will) maintain interest and contacts,” Esquivel concludes. “A new update is expected in the near future.”
Ange Postecoglou needs defensive depth
Caceres, an uncompromising, bone-rattling centre-half who would give Romero a run for his money in terms of his on-field aggression, has also been linked with Manchester United and Newcastle.
Tottenham appear to be further along in their pursuit, however. Postecoglou was forced to turn to the out-of-favour Eric Dier and the out-of-position Ben Davies at Wolves after losing both Romero and Van de Ven to suspension and injury respectively.
Esquivel believes that Caceres and his agent have already given the ‘green light’ for a mid-season switch to North London.
Tottenham are now fourth in the Premier League table. A third straight loss could see them drop out of the Champions League places.
