Tottenham Hotspur have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Sebastian Caceres with Uruguay coach Marcelo Bielsa urging the Premier League-linked defender to make a move.

That is according to Fox Sports

Marcelo Bielsa, Uruguay’s veteran head coach, reportedly believes that 24-year-old Sebastian Caceres can take his game to the next level on the other side of the Atlantic. And, should the defender follow the advice of the former Leeds United, Marseille and Athletic Bilbao boss, a potential move to Tottenham Hotspur is likely to hold plenty of appeal.

Spurs, according to El Universal, are preparing an offer for Caceres ahead of the January transfer window. Currently plying his trade in Mexico with Club America, he will become a free-agent in the New Year and therefore can be picked up for nothing by a Tottenham side flying high at the top of the Premier League table.

A right-footed centre-half, Caceres has seven caps for Uruguay, most of those coming since the appointment of the vastly-experienced, mercurial Bielsa. The one-time Liverpool Montevideo man was excellent as Uruguay defeated Brazil 2-0 in a World Cup qualifier last week, helping to nullify the threat of Selecao forward – and future Tottenham team-mate? – Richarlison.

Free-agent incoming?

Cacares would add further depth to a Spurs backline already boosted by the arrival of Ashley Phillips from Blackburn Rovers. Fellow youngster Luka Vuskovic will also join when he turns 18.

Tottenham’s interest, meanwhile, raises further questions about the future of Eric Dier. One of the longest-serving members of the Spurs squad has not played a minute of football since Ange Postecoglou took over, and feels destined to depart with his contract running down.

“(Dier) has got himself in a situation. Obviously, with a change in manger, sometimes you find yourself out of favour, and you’ve got to cut your ties,” former Tottenham midfielder Danny Murphy tells talkSPORT (11 October, 12.50pm).

“You’ve got to go.”
