Tottenham fans and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg were recently devastated by the news that Rodrigo Bentancur would miss the rest of the season.

The Denmark international admitted he feels “hurt” after seeing the Uruguay international suffer a serious knee injury in the 4-1 defeat to Leicester, which could even rule him out of action until November.

While that came as a significant blow to Spurs and Antonio Conte, there is now one reason to feel slightly calmer about the situation.

What’s the story?

Well, the performance of Pape Matar Sarr against AC Milan provided a welcome distraction for those still reeling from the news about Bentancur.

The Senegal international was described as “fantastic” by Harry Kane after delivering an outstanding display inside the San Siro, on a night where he was unfortunate to be on the losing side.

WhoScored shows that Sarr made five successful tackles and also had three shots against the Italian champions, with no Tottenham player recording more in either department.

Of course, Bentancur was on track to win Tottenham’s Player of the Season award having enjoyed an outstanding campaign for Spurs, so it will take a lot for the 20-year-old to step into the South American’s shoes.

Nevertheless, a display as impressive as that from Sarr – against AC Milan of all sides, and also on his Champions League debut – should certainly give fans hope that he can step up to the plate.

Others at Tottenham must step up after Bentancur news

While Sarr looks ready to help Conte replace Bentancur in the midfield department, the Senegalese maestro is not the type of player to match the Uruguayan’s goal output.

Bentancur is third behind Kane and Heung-min Son in the Tottenham scoring charts this season with six goals from midfield.

Sarr is more of a holding midfielder rather than someone who will trouble the opposition goalkeeper, so the likes of Richarlison, Dejan Kulusevski and Arnaut Danjuma must now step up to fill the goalscoring void.
