Tottenham Hotspur are plotting to sign a new defender, but now face a battle with Arsenal to sign Bologna defender Takehiro Tomiyasu.

Tomiyasu has emerged as Tottenham’s top centre back target having impressed with Bologna.

New director of football Fabio Paratici will be well aware of Tomiyasu as one of the top defenders in Italy, and work is ongoing over a deal.

Tutto Bologna reported earlier this week that Tottenham have agreed personal terms with Tomiyasu, but are still around £2million short of a deal with Bologna.

With Tottenham yet to pay that difference, they are leaving themselves open to losing out on Tomiyasu – and their bitter rivals Arsenal are now in the mix.

Gianluca Di Marzio claims Arsenal are in talks to try and sign Tomiyasu, seemingly lining him up as an alternative target to Brighton and Hove Albion star Ben White.

Missing out on Tomiyasu would be a blow for Tottenham anyway, but seeing join Arsenal? That may be too difficult to stomach.

Tottenham fans are now taking to Twitter to react to this update, suggesting that missing out on Tomiyasu to Arsenal would be ’embarrassing’.

Others really fear that Tottenham are going to ‘bottle’ the Tomiyasu deal, begging the club to just pay the money and get him to North London – and not the red half.
