According to Tutto Bologna, Tottenham Hotspur have agreed provisional terms with Bologna defender Takehiro Tomiyasu – but have yet to actually agree a fee.
Tottenham need defenders – badly.
Toby Alderweireld wants to leave according to The Athletic, Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez didn’t exactly inspire confidence last season and Joe Rodon is still a relative rookie in the Premier League.
New director of football Fabio Paratici must find defensive reinforcements, and it looks like Bologna star Tomiyasu is a key target.
Tottenham’s pursuit of Tomiyasu
Sky Sports reported last week that Tottenham had opened talks to sign Tomiyasu, hoping to secure the Japanese international for around £15million.
These new reports in Italy suggest that Tottenham already have a rough agreement in place with Tomiyasu, negotiated through his agents rather than with the defender himself.
However, Tottenham are some way off a deal. Bologna want around €20million to €25million (£17million to £21.5million), meaning Paratici needs to increase his bid.
Tomiyasu a smart target for Spurs
Don’t for a second think that Tottenham want Tomiyasu for marketing reasons in Japan; he is a quality defender and a ‘warrior’ according to team-mate Mitchell Dijks.
Tomiyasu can play at right back or centre back, offering great versatility that could come in handy in different systems, whilst he is also quick and able to play out from the back.
At just 22, Tomiyasu still has major potential for the future, and whilst he isn’t a big name in England, he is a potentially smart addition if Paratici can get it done.
