Tottenham Hotspur are preparing a new move for Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly amid admiration from Matt Wells.

Bournemouth are bracing themselves for a new offer from Tottenham Hotspur for defender Lloyd Kelly in January.

That is according to the London Evening Standard, who claim that Tottenham will focus on a new left-sided centre back in 2024.

Micky van de Ven picked up a hamstring injury against Chelsea on Monday and there are fears that he could be sidelined for a while.

Ben Davies can fill in there if needed but Tottenham are now expected to go for another left-sided defender in January.

Tottenham Hotspur expected to return for Lloyd Kelly

Reports from the London Evening Standard suggest that Spurs are ‘expected’ to target Bournemouth defender Kelly in January.

It’s stated that Bournemouth are bracing themselves for a new approach from Tottenham after standing firm on Kelly’s future over the summer.

TalkSPORT’s Alex Crook reported on deadline day that Tottenham had offered £20million for Kelly, but had gone quiet after Bournemouth rejected the bid.

The January window is fast approaching now and Kelly is back on the radar with cut-price fee now expected.

Kelly is out of contract at the end of the season, meaning Bournemouth risk losing him for nothing unless they cash in now.

Matt Wells key to Tottenham’s Kelly interest

The report adds that Tottenham coach Matt Wells is a key factor in the interest in signing Kelly.

Wells works closely with Tottenham’s defenders in training, as highlighted by Ange Postecoglou earlier this season.

Wells coached Kelly at Bournemouth and is understood to be a keen admirer of the former Bristol City man.

Kelly – hailed as ‘outstanding’ by his former boss Eddie Howe – fits what Tottenham want; he’s left-footed, athletic, homegrown and already has knowledge of Wells’ methods.

Add in that TEAMtalk suggest Tottenham have the best chance of signing Kelly ahead of Liverpool and Newcastle, and this move would make perfect sense in January.
