According to numerous reports that emerged on Monday, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in a double swoop for Everton’s Anthony Gordon and Richarlison.
Tottenham’s attack will be very scary if the London club manage to land these two in a deal that could be worth around £85m, but, of course, there will also be some serious knock-on effects at Everton.
Indeed, the Toffees are staring down the barrel the prospect of losing two key attackers in one fell swoop, and they will need to construct some major surgery on their attack.
However, there’s a bit of a problem for the Merseyside club.
After years of financial mismanagement, Everton may not be able to reinvest the potential £85m windfall that they’re in-line for here, and that means that they may have to look for an in-house solution.
Luckily, Everton have plenty of players ready to step up from academy starlets like Ellis Simms to fringe players such as a certain Dele Alli.
Indeed, Alli has really struggled to make an impact at Everton so far after joining the club in January, but if Gordon and Richarlison are to depart, Frank Lampard will need to come up with another attacking solution, and that may involve rejigging his system to get more out of Alli.
At his best, Alli can be an absolute superstar, but, as of yet, he’s not been fully trusted to make that sort of impact at Everton, but if Gordon and Richarlison go to Spurs, Lampard may have no choice but to throw the England international in at the deep end.
Ironically, it may be a transfer involving Tottenham that eventually leads to Alli getting his shot to prove his worth at Goodison Park.
Spurs could be about to inadvertently do Alli a real favour by clearing a path into the starting XI at Everton.
