Reports claim Tottenham and Newcastle could sign Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz this summer – a player that Jermaine Jenas recently said is one of the most “underrated” players in the Premier League right now.
The Brazil international has been a mainstay for Villa since joining the club for £15million from Manchester City in 2019. In just three seasons, he has clocked up 111 appearances in all competitions for the Midlands outfit.
However, Luiz is about to enter the final 12 months of his contract with Steven Gerrard’s side and reports say Antonio Conte is an ‘admirer’ of the midfielder. Newcastle, meanwhile, have Luiz on their summer radar.

Speaking on Match of the Day back in December 2020, ex-Tottenham and Newcastle midfielder Jenas was full of praise for Luiz. Rated at £30million (Il Romanista), Jenas said he is one of the most-underrated players in the league.
“Douglas Luiz in that midfield area. He’s one of the most underrated players in the league, I think. He’s a top, top footballer. Top central-midfield player. Himself and John McGinn have really formed a partnership.”
Newcastle and Tottenham could sign Luiz: Jenas said he is underrated
Is Luiz underrated? A player that is capable of scoring goals from distance, an incredible array of passing and one that is tough-tackling in midfield. Necessary aggression. He is a player that is too good to be in a 14th-placed side.
But is he good enough to play for a Champions League club? Especially, one that has just signed Yves Bissouma? Probably not. Luiz is perfect for a player pushing for Europe next season. Newcastle is absolutely ideal.
