Planet Sport claim Newcastle and Tottenham are keeping tabs on Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz this summer – with the Brazil international’s contract due to expire in 2023. Antonio Conte is said to be ‘an admirer’.
Luiz, 24, has seen his stock rise considerably since joining Villa back in 2019 for £15million (BBC) from Manchester City. He has gone on to play 111 times in all competitions for the Midlands outfit in three seasons.
His form has seen him linked with some huge clubs in Europe – Arsenal and Roma notably. Now, it appears that Newcastle have added the five-time Brazil star to their summer shortlist, as they close in on Sven Botman.
Meanwhile, Luiz still has admirers at Tottenham in the form of Conte – despite Spurs bringing in Yves Bissouma from Brighton. Pep Guardiola once said he is “very clever with the ball” and “so physically strong”.
Newcastle and Tottenham keeping tabs on Villa midfielder Luiz
Which club is best for Luiz this summer? Well, Tottenham – as aforementioned – have brought in Bissouma. The need for a midfielder is now small, even if Harry Winks does complete a move to Frank Lampard’s Everton.
They would still have Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Rodrigo Bentancur, Oliver Skipp and Bissouma fighting for two positions. Newcastle could do with a holding midfielder – with Jonjo Shelvey remaining the club’s best option.
He would team up with Brazilians such as Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes. But his best move would surely be Arsenal – again, linking up with numerous Brazilians. But also, because Arsenal are in Europe and need a midfielder.
