Tottenham have reportedly joined Arsenal in the race to sign Borussia Monchengladbach attacking Marcus Thuram with the player’s contract expiring next June – a player the Bundesliga website has compared to Anthony Martial.

Thuram, 25, has been on fire this season. The Italy-born France international has scored 13 goals in 17 games, laying on four assists. 90Min say Spurs are weighing up a move, whether on the cheap in January, or on a free next summer.

But Antonio Conte’s side are not alone in their pursuit of the striker. Indeed, Milan Live said earlier this month that Arsenal and Aston Villa are also looking at Thuram. A player that is capable of playing out wide, but naturally a striker.

Gladbach bought him from Guingamp in 2019, for a fee of just £9million. He has been excellent in Germany, having a hand in 67 goals during 119 games. Now available on the cheap, or on a free next summer, interest is hardly surprising.

Following his move to Gladbach, the Bundesliga compared Lillian’s son to Manchester United star Martial: “Thuram may be slightly taller than Martial and possess a bulkier frame, but that makes him no less dangerous.

“Quick, direct and with the upper body strength to brush opponents out of the way, the sight of Gladbach’s new man running at you is enough to make any defender reconsider their profession,” the Bundesliga reported back in 2019.

Tottenham join Arsenal in race to sign Thuram: Compared to Martial

Which club needs him the most; Tottenham or Arsenal? The Gunners need depth out wide. At the start of the season you would argue they had two excellent options up top in Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah, another might be required.

Injuries to Deki Kulusevski, Richarlison, Lucas Moura and Son Heung-min have prevented Antonio Conte from having all of his attacking stars to choose from for the entire 2022-23 season so far. They need cover for Harry Kane.

Kane has started all 22 of Tottenham’s matches this season and he needs a rest – they need to reduce his workload. Thuram would be ideal, given he can also play out wide. Richarlison is naturally a winger, while Thuram is a striker.

So, who needs him more? Tottenham could do with Thuram more. But he would also be very welcomed at Arsenal. The Gunners are probably better off going for a player that is naturally a winger – Mykhaylo Mudryk springs to mind.
