Tony Cascarino has claimed that the incoming transfer of Sven Botman to Newcastle United is ‘really interesting’, as he told talkSPORT.

The former Marseille striker backed Newcastle to eventually get into the Premier League’s top six and thinks they are ‘a lot closer than people think’.

Botman is edging closer to swapping the colours of Lille to don the famous black and white of Newcastle United – his recent Instagram post got fans talking.

If Botman does arrive, then he will be the second centre-back to be purchased by Eddie Howe, added with Dan Burn’s arrival back in the winter.

Nonetheless, this is what Cascarino made of the Botman rumours and what the Magpies can do going forward under their forward-thinking manager.

“I think there is more to come,” said Cascarino. “The signing of Sven Botman from Lille is a really interesting one. He was a product of the Ajax academy, where they basically produce players that play a certain way.

“Both feet. Centre-half receives it and then moves it. Six foot three. Dominant in the air. I think he has got one of the best records in aerial duels won. Technically he is very sound.

“It shows you how Newcastle are going to evolve as a football club quite quickly. I would be very optimistic about them.

“I think they can, with Eddie Howe, be ready to challenge for the top six. They aren’t ready for it yet, but they are a lot closer than people think. They will definitely be top eight now.”

HOW LONG UNTIL NEWCASTLE RETURN TO EUROPE?

Trophies and a return to Europe are what Newcastle fans crave the most and many of them will be hoping it unfolds next season.

Securing Champions League football, they are way off that, there is a possibility of the Europa League, although it will be very tough yet, but getting back into Europe via the Conference League would be a very positive step forward.

Even if it doesn’t happen next season, as long as the club secures a top ten finish, the mood around St James’ Park will be a pretty healthy one.

But if Howe can end Newcastle’s long-awaited trophy drought then it would be something else, there’s no reason why the club shouldn’t be pushing hard to win the FA Cup or League Cup next season.
