While praising Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, Chelsea forward Timo Werner mentioned Roberto Firmino of Liverpool in a positive way, as quoted on Goal.

Germany international forward Werner was speaking about France and Benzema in a press conference.

The Germans will take on the French in Euro 2020 on Tuesday.

Benzema is likely to start for France, and while outlining the attributes of the Madrid striker, Chelsea star Werner drew comparisons with Liverpool forward Firmino.

Goal quotes Werner as saying: “Of course you learn something from a striker like Benzema. Just because he has achieved a lot, but also because of his quality. For me, he is incredible with the ball, the way he dribbles, the way he moves, the way he finishes.

“I think he’s like Roberto Firmino at Liverpool, getting the ball early, distributing and still being quick with his qualities in the penalty area. With Robert Lewandowski and Cristiano Ronaldo, he forms the top three centre-forwards for me.”

Encouraging for Roberto Firmino

Firmino did not have the best of seasons, and there have been suggestions that he should be sold.

The Brazil international forward is not a regular goalscorer, and there have been calls from some for Liverpool to sign an upgrade on him.

Werner’s comments underline just how good Firmino is.

Getting public praise from a fellow professional is a big deal.

Like Werner, there will be many other footballers who appreciate just how good the 29-year-old is.

Firmino has been on the books of Liverpool since the summer of 2015 when he joined from Hoffenheim for a transfer fee reported by BBC Sport to be worth £29 million.

The Brazilian has been key in Liverpool winning the Premier League and the Champions League under manager Jurgen Klopp.
