Tim Sherwood thinks James Maddison will secure a summer transfer to Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United, even though he would like to see him at Tottenham Hotspur.

The former Premier League boss thinks the relegated Leicester City midfielder is a ‘very good player’ and someone Tottenham fans would ‘buy into’ if he was added to their squad this summer, as he told No Tippy Tappy Football Podcast.

With Ange Postecoglou recently named Tottenham’s new boss, he will want to sign the top players across Europe, but he doesn’t have the luxury of Europe, unlike Newcastle United, who are in the Champions League.

James Maddison was backed to leave the King Power Stadium even before they dropped down to the Championship, so now it’s just a case of when and not if.

But which team will be fortunate to sign a player that, during the past two Premier League seasons, has scored 22 goals in 45 games added with 17 assists?

Sherwood’s instant answer when asked that question was Newcastle, although, when Sam Allardyce suggested Spurs, he issued the following response.

“Newcastle,” responded Sherwood about Maddison’s next destination. “I would love to see it (Tottenham transfer). I think he’s a very good player.

“It’s one the fans will buy into. You need a lot more than him, though. Yeah (he improves Tottenham).”

Maddison should make Newcastle move

The Magpies are playing Champions League football, they are in need of that playmaker in the middle of the park and their project is far better than what’s going on at Tottenham.

Yes, Spurs also need a player of Maddison’s ilk too, but there is every chance that Harry Kane walks out of the door this summer, or even in 12 months, which wouldn’t help Maddison’s game.

Newcastle are just adding talent to their squad, looking up and seriously pushing to end their trophy drought. The same can’t be said for those in north London.
