Tim Sherwood has spoken about how now-Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen ‘influenced’ Harry Kane as he became Tottenham Hotspur’s all-time leading goalscorer on Sunday.

The 29-year-old netted goal number 267 for Spurs against Manchester City, surpassing the record of the club’s legendary figure and one of the most iconic goalscorers of all time, Jimmy Greaves.

Former Tottenham boss Sherwood brought Kane through as a youngster, as well as handing the goal-crazy striker his first Premier League start and he spoke about how relentless he was on the training field, as he told Premier League Productions (05/02/23 at 6:30 pm).

When Kane was coming into the first team at Spurs, Eriksen was just getting comfortable at the club because he was one of many signings brought in when Gareth Bale left for Real Madrid.

Now, many of those players that were signed struggled big time in north London, with Eriksen being the exception.

And it seems as though the Denmark international, who is now thriving at Manchester United, played his part in inspiring Kane to be where he is today.

“Christian Eriksen was a massive influence on his development,” said Sherwood. “He used to watch how he developed and wanted to improve himself.

“Harry realised there was no time to waste on the training field. He never wasted one day of his career and he still doesn’t on the training field. He realises every day is important to the trade, for moments like that where he can deliver.

“It has become second nature to him now. He has had injuries and has had to bounce back from those injuries. But what he does is he works hard to get himself fit and he studies the opposition. Works with his teammates and realises where he can get better. And look what he has achieved. It’s incredible.”

COULD KANE JOIN ERIKSEN AT OLD TRAFFORD?

The England captain has less than 18 months left on his current deal. Something has to give this summer.

If Kane signs a new contract, then it puts everything to bed and he will finish his career at the club and aim to break Alan Shearer’s all-time Premier League goals record of 260.

But if he wants that all-important trophy, then there are elite and trophy-winning clubs across Europe that will be willing to take him on board.

Manchester United themselves, who need a number nine, are in the League Cup final in Erik ten Hag’s first season. If they win that, then it’s a sign of things to come for the Dutchman at Old Trafford.

And it also might be a signal to Kane about how he can elevate the team to greater things if he follows in the footsteps of Teddy Sheringham from many, many years ago.
