Newcastle United have plenty of unfinished business to attend to when the transfer window reopens in January, with a lack of available funds leaving Rafa Benitez frustrated.

But with numerous alleged Magpies targets coming to their end of their deals next summer, their prices are likely to have come down by the New Year.

So could Newcastle return for the following three players?

Wayne Hennessey

Goalkeeper was one of the many positions Newcastle failed to fill during the summer transfer window, and a new one could feature highly on Benitez’s list of winter targets – if he’s still there of course. Napoli’s Pepe Reina is also out of contract in 2018, but could be harder to prise away than Hennessey, whose Palace side could be in trouble this season.

Diego Laxalt

A proposed move for Chelsea’s Brazilian prospect Kenedy also failed to materialise last month, leaving Newcastle scarily short at left-back. Though not a natural in the role, Genoa’s Laxalt has played there before as well as in central midfield, making the Uruguay winger a potentially useful addition.

Jack Wilshere

Banished by Arsenal last season, the England international’s Gunners prospects look no greater at present. Newcastle were linked with Wilshere along with several other central midfielders in the summer, and could try to rescue him – money permitting. Birmingham are said to have offered £90,000-a-week to take him on loan, but to no avail.

Other alleged Magpies targets who are out of contract next summer: Pepe Reina (Napoli), Lewis Holtby (Hamburg), Ross Barkley (Everton), Scott Arfield (Burnley), Abel Hernandez (Hull City).
