Paul Merson has suggested how Newcastle United should spend their new wealth, with the former Arsenal star making a comparison to Tottenham.
Writing in the Daily Star, the Sky Sports pundit believes that the Toon should sign fully-established players who are ready for Premier League football rather than prospects who could compete at the top level.
Merson then brought up the case of Tottenham in 2013, who spent their money acquired from the sale of Gareth Bale on seven players who had potential but who at that stage of their careers were not ready for the Premier League.
Some of the players signed in that famous spending spree included the likes of Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela. As well as some notable flops like Roberto Soldado and Vlad Chiriches.
Merson wrote on how Newcastle should spend their wealth: “Buying £10m and £12m players doesn’t win anything these days. Just ask Tottenham. They sold Gareth Bale and bought loads of players in that bracket. It just doesn’t work.”
Indeed, it as an interesting comment from the former Arsenal. And one could argue it is a good point make to, given Newcastle currently find themselves 19th in the Premier League table.

Yet on social media, some Spurs fans were fuming at Merson for suggesting that Newcastle should not take a punt on players with potential. After all, numerous top clubs have found success with this method.
