Paul Merson has claimed that ‘somebody will buy’, Arsenal target, Ruben Neves, as he told Sky Sports News (12/02/22 at 1:25 pm).

The former midfielder added that Neves has ‘kicked on’ with Wolves this season after a ‘stop-start’ campaign last term.

Last week, Neves faced off against the club that seemingly want to buy him when Arsenal recorded a 1-0 win at Wolves.

The Portugal international even had the nerve to rile up the Arsenal fans by claiming that their players celebrated ‘like they had won the league’.

With Gabriel opening the scoring in the first half, his namesake, Martinelli, was then shown two of the quickest yellow cards, which forced Mikel Arteta’s side to play with ten men for most of the second period.

Given everything the north London side threw at the match to keep the clean sheet, it was understandable that they celebrated in such a wild fashion.

Either way, given the talent in Neves’s boots and that he has gone up another level this season, Merson doesn’t expect him to be in the Midlands for too long.

“I think Neves is a much, much better player when Moutinho is in the team,” said Merson.

“I think last year was a bit stop-start. I think this year he has kicked on again. He had a major season when they came up.

“But, all of a sudden now, he’s got used to the Premier League and the pace of it. With Moutinho next to him, he picks the right time of when to go and when not to go.

“No disrespect to Wolves. I think somebody will buy Neves. I think they will buy him.”

Both Arsenal and Wolves are fighting for fourth spot and that could have a huge bearing on where someone like Neves ends up.

If Wolves secure fourth place, then there is no way Wolves sell one of their star assets.

But if it’s Arsenal, then it puts them in the driving seat to sign many of the top talents across Europe, including the sharp-shooting boots of Neves.

Technically, he is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League and he would suit Arteta’s side down to the bone.

Neves’s ability to control a game, spray passes and time his runs forward would suit the hard-hitting and more defensive-minded talents of Thomas Partey.
