Paul Merson has claimed that Tottenham manager, Antonio Conte, is an ‘elite’ coach and Spurs must be ‘pinching themselves’ that they have got him.

Despite joining the club just before Christmas, Conte has taken a Tottenham team in all-sorts of trouble and guided them into the Champions League.

It’s a remarkable achievement from the Italian because, going off last season and the start of this campaign, the club weren’t exactly moving forward.

But Conte, like he has done throughout his career from Inter Milan to Chelsea, has dragged a team and made them punch above its weight.

Former Arsenal midfielder Merson was full of praise for the Spurs boss and how they now have that bit more of a chance to close the gap on the Premier League’s top two because of him, as he told Sky Sports News.

“They have an elite manager, Tottenham,” said Merson. “I mean elite. They must be pinching themselves.

“To have a quality of a manager for that quality of a team that don’t look like they are going to win the league. Apart from when Pochettino was there.

“But to get an elite manager like that is phenomenal. Absolutely phenomenal.

“They have more chance of closing that gap (to the top two) with him. But he won’t mess about (in selling players).”

TIME FOR LEVY TO NOW BACK TOTTENHAM’S ELITE COACH

Time and time again, Spurs have been in situations where things are going well, but it’s Daniel Levy not sticking his neck on the line in order to take the club further forward.

Well, this summer is going to be the test of all tests because Conte wants to win trophies and he needs more quality to compete, especially with Champions League football next season.

But what will be music to Tottenham fans’ ears is that, ENIC have now ploughed an extra £150 million into the club after agreeing on a huge capital increase ahead of the summer transfer window.

To put it simply, Conte is now going to be backed in the summer market and Spurs fans can head into the summer with a big smile on their faces.
