Alan Shearer thinks Tottenham Hotspur’s style of play could possibly stop them from challenging for the Premier League title, but he made it clear that ‘it works’, at the moment, and the fans are ‘really happy’.
The legendary striker also pointed out how fans ‘love’ Antonio Conte following Tottenham’s 2-0 win over Everton on Saturday, as he told NBC Sports (15/10/22 at 7:25 pm).
Whilst the awards aren’t handed out in October, Spurs are sitting third in the table after ten Premier League games and they are four points behind the current leader’s, Arsenal.
That should consist of them being in the title race, but it’s much easier having your head above the water in October than it is in March.
If Spurs, or even Arsenal who have dropped points in only one game, are still in and around the likes of Manchester City during the final few months of the season, then things could become very interesting.
One thing is for sure, you can only get the job done and what’s put in front of you, which Spurs are doing so far, as Shearer shared his thoughts on the team.
“It works, at this moment in time (Tottenham being efficient),” said Shearer. “It remains to be seen whether they can continue that and win games.
“But they have a style of play, which works for them and their players. Their fans are really happy. They love the manager. You heard them chanting his name towards the end of the game.
On what could derail or stop Spurs: “I think because of their style of play. But, at the minute, they won’t change. I don’t think they will change, even if they get one or two bad results because that’s the way the manager wants to play. That’s how he sets his team up and with this squad of players, it’s working really, really well.”
INJURIES, POST-WORLD CUP AND JANUARY WINDOW
Apart from Man City, any other team thinking of contesting for the title simply can’t be without key players and the likes of Harry Kane are just that for Spurs.
If key players can remain out of the treatment room at Hotspur Way, then that will be one tick in the box for the team.
Then it’s how teams, not just Spurs, react post-World Cup. It’s going to be a unique situation for all and many teams might just lose or even gain momentum depending on their situation.
Another big factor is the January transfer window. Last time out, the arrivals of Rodrigo Bentacur and Dejan Kulusevski helped the team secure a top-four finish, it wouldn’t be a surprise if some of that same magic might need to be sprinkled on when the transfer window re-opens.
