Ian Wright has claimed that Leeds United ‘didn’t back’ Marcelo Bielsa in the transfer market when he was at the club and he hopes Jesse Marsch is treated differently.
The former striker added that the Leeds owners must be ‘breathing a massive sigh of relief’ after they secured Premier League status on the final day of the season.
It was a season to forget on all fronts for the Yorkshire side and one they are seemingly trying to put behind them as quick as possible.
That’s proven by the fact that they have signed Brenden Aaronson from RB Salzburg – the player himself has already admitted he was ‘sweating’ watching the club’s last game of the season.
Nonetheless, this is what Wright told the Premier League season review on PLP regarding the Whites in the transfer market.
“I think the owners must be breathing a massive sigh of relief,” said Wright.
“You look at what Bielsa did to that team. Taking them from the Championship and turning them into a real force.
“He needed backing. They didn’t give him the backing. In the end, I think his team ran out of steam because they needed the team to freshen it up. There was a lot of hard work with the way they were playing. And they didn’t back him.
“Now they have brought in Jesse Marsch, you are hoping they are going to back him because they should have made signings in January.
“They don’t know if Raphinha is going to be there. There is talk about Kalvin Phillips, so they are going to need to strengthen and they will need the kind of players that will give Marsch to do something in this league.”

BIELSA NOT BACKED OR BIELSA NOT WANTING TO ADD NEW FACES TO HIS SQUAD?
It’s been known, since Leeds’ Championship days under Bielsa, that he likes to work with a small squad.
That didn’t change when the club were promoted to the Premier League and, in the end, nearly played a part in them getting relegated.
Leeds needed more depth in January, everyone could see it. But was it a case of Bielsa just not wanting new faces?
Club legend Eddie Gray told talkSPORT that the money and players were there for Leeds to sign, it’s just that Bielsa didn’t want them.
