Brenden Aaronson has told Sky Sports that watching Leeds’ last game of the season against Brentford left him “sweating”. Aaronson was announced as the club’s first signing of the summer window on Thursday evening.

Aaronson, 21, joins the club from RedBull Salzburg – where he clocked up 29 goal involvements from midfield in just 65 games. The USA international was the subject of two offers from Leeds in the January transfer window.

But Leeds failed to get their man. Since then, Jesse Marsch – his previous manager at Salzburg – has replaced Marcelo Bielsa. Leeds confirmed their Premier League status on Sunday with a late 2-1 win over Brentford.

Hours after, reports emerged that Leeds were close to his arrival. More reports came out on Wednesday that Aaronson was undergoing a medical at Leeds on Thursday. Now, Leeds have confirmed the £24million deal.

In an interview with Sky Sports, Aaronson shares how he and his girlfriend watched Jack Harrison slam home an injury-time winner to stay up – from a cafe in Vienna. He says he was “pacing up and down” and “sweating”.

“This last month had me sweating a little bit. We were in Vienna at the time, and me and my girlfriend were in a cafe. I was pacing around, sweating, it was tough to watch, but they got the win,” Aaronson told Sky Sports.

Aaronson on watching Leeds against Brentford: Brilliant signing

Perseverance has clearly been the key for Leeds in this scenario. Having been unable to get him in January, the Whites have stuck to their principles. Victor Orta deserves credit for getting a deal over the line for Aaronson.

It is a brilliant signing. Leeds, at times, have lacked creativity in midfield. Certainly goals. So bringing in a player that had a hand in a goal or an assist in every other game is great work. At 21, Aaronson is a real wonderkid.
