St. Johnstone came agonisingly close to pulling off a shock win over Turkish giants Galatasaray in the Europa League qualifiers last night, drawing 1-1 in Istanbul – and Rangers fans want the Gers to swoop for Saintees midfielder Ali McCann.

The Northern Irish international wowed fans with his performance in the middle of the park for the Perth side and Rangers fans are convinced working with Steven Gerrard will make him a much better player.

While Rangers aren’t exactly short of options in the middle of the park, McCann’s performances have fans wanting him at Ibrox where he can team with Northern Irish teammate Steven Davis.

St. Johnstone are unlikely to be willing to let McCann go on the cheap however and, if Rangers were to launch a bid, it would cost a pretty penny.

However, with his deal expiring at the end of next season, pressure will be building on Saints to cash in or risk losing him for free in future.

Despite being a Northern Irish international, the Edinburgh-born midfielder would count towards’ Rangers’ quota of homegrown players in Europe having come through the ranks at St. Johnstone to establish himself as a key player in Callum Davidson’s side.

A move to Rangers doesn’t seem likely in the short-term but things could quickly change in football – and Gers fans would love to see McCann added to the Ibrox squad.
