Rangers star Kemar Roofe missed today’s Premiership defeat by Dundee United after his young child was hospitalised – and Rangers fans have put the disappointment of today’s result behind them to send messages of support to the striker and his family.

Steven Gerrard confirmed before the game that Roofe had withdrawn at short notice due to a “family issue” before Rangers‘ official Twitter account posted a brief statement asking fans to respect his privacy.

The striker was expected to start at Tannadice against Dundee United with suspension ruling him out of Tuesday’s clash with Malmo so it was a surprise to see him missing when the Rangers starting XI was confirmed.

That led to a start for Alfredo Morelos after only a couple of training sessions following his return from Colombia and international duty.

Roofe’s goal celebration acknowledges his daughters, Alarnie and Luna, with the striker making their initials with his fingers, calling it his “trademark” previously, saying: “With my fingers, I form the letters A and L after I score. That stands for the names of my daughters Alarnie and Luna. Every goal is for them. A striker must have a trademark.”

Once news broke of the reason for Roofe’s absence, fans were quick to take to social media to send their support to the former Leeds and Anderlecht star.

Here are some of the messages of support from Rangers fans on Twitter:
