Former Scottish Premiership star Kris Commons believes that Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is eyeing up the Newcastle United job.
Writing in the Daily Mail, the ex-Celtic midfielder claimed that Gerrard is subtly convincing the Premier League side to hire him. Steve Bruce is likely to leave Newcastle following Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund takeover of the club.
Gerrard, who earns a reported £52,000-a-week, spoke out via BBC Sport about speculation about taking the Newcastle job over the weekend. And whilst the Rangers man said he didn’t want to get involved with the rumours, he didn’t outright rule himself out of the running.
Indeed, with the SPL title holders having a mixed start to the season both domestically and continentally, there is a good chance that Gerrard could make a move down south to join Newcastle as manager.
And according to Commons, he believes Gerrard is plotting on accepting the Newcastle role based on his comments.
The former Celtic star wrote: “He knows exactly how his comments will be viewed. Whether Newcastle are interested in him is one thing. But there’s no doubt in my mind that he’s interested in Newcastle.”
Gerrard could tarnish his Rangers legacy if he accepts Newcastle role this season

There’s no denying that Newcastle is an enticing project for Gerrard. With the club likely to receive huge financial backing, the Rangers manager will have all the tools needed to have a real crack at managing in the Premier League.
Yet whilst the temptation is there, Gerrard will all but certainly ruin his legacy with Rangers if he is to jump ship before the end of the season. Supporters have remained loyal to the former Liverpool captain. And his reputation will plummet should he leave in the coming weeks.
