Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Newcastle United have an obsession with signing James Maddison.
The Leicester City midfielder has been on Eddie Howe’s radar since last summer.
And although a transfer to Newcastle failed to materialise then, Romano has revealed that the Magpies remain in contact with the England international – even if a summer move is more likely than now.
He told CBS: “On Newcastle’s side, I’m told their big target – it’s not going to be an easy one in January but for the summer – is James Maddison, a player they wanted really last summer, they are still tracking him, they are still keeping contacts. Maddison is always a kind of obsession for Newcastle.”

According to Ben Jacobs on Twitter – as covered by HITC Sport – Tottenham are ‘one to watch’ regarding Maddison.
And what a difference a year makes because if he had the choice between the Lilywhites and Newcastle, the latter have a genuine shot.
That’s because Howe’s side are above Spurs in the Premier League table and could very possibly finish above them come May.
That right there illustrates Newcastle’s growing power in English football and if they’re as desperate for Maddison as Romano makes out, don’t be surprised if he winds up at St James’s Park.
