Sheffield Wednesday have been linked with a move for the 67-cap Switzerland international.
Days after being linked with Sheffield Wednesday, Switzerland defender Johan Djourou has suggested he is moving to a new club.
According to The Sun, the Owls have held talks with the former Arsenal man, who is a free agent after leaving Hamburg at the end of last season.
And in a post on Instagram yesterday (Thursday), Djourou wrote: “(T)he wait is nearly over! I am so excited and can’t wait to begin this new journey.”
Wednesday are desperate for central defensive reinforcements, having seen their options reduced to just Tom Lees and Glenn Loovens since the end of last season.
And Owls head coach Carlos Carvalhal, who has refused to comment on speculation linking his side with a move for Djourou, suggested to the BBC earlier this week that free signings are considered in light of the Football League’s financial fair play restrictions.
Djourou, who has 67 caps for his country, played more than 100 times for Hamburg and Hannover in Germany’s Bundesliga, and appeared on a similar number of occasions for Birmingham City and Arsenal at Premier League level – gaining Champions League experience with the latter club.
Wednesday travel to Preston North End for their Championship opener on Saturday, although it remains to be seen whether they will have the 30-year-old on board.
