Kylian Mbappe signing for Liverpool has the been fantasy of many-a-Reds supporter for quite a while.
And in fairness, it did have its merit once upon a time.
According to Marca 10 months ago, Liverpool actually enquired about signing the Paris Saint-Germain hitman, who was heading into the final year of his contract in the French capital.
That was one example of plenty of tentative speculation about the 23-year-old joining Jurgen Klopp’s outfit over the past couple of years.
Real Madrid are by far the most linked-to club when it comes to the France international but, according to Fabrizio Romano, there was indeed a ‘third club’ and that was the Reds.
He told his YouTube channel on Friday: “The third club trying to sign Kylian Mbappe, yes, was Liverpool, but they knew it was impossible to compete with Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain. Liverpool knew it was impossible to offer him £30 million per season because as they are doing with Mo Salah negotiations, they don’t want to break their salary structure.”
Marca have this afternoon reported that after all the speculation about a transfer to Spain, staying at PSG is now looking increasingly likely.
He is out of contract next month, hence the tide of rumours crashing around at the moment, but a new deal seems to be in the offing at the moment.
Kylian Mbappe signing for Liverpool – a pipe dream
Despite the genuine links to legitimate publications such as Marca, this was always a pie in the sky.
Mbappe is reported to be interested in a transfer to Liverpool in the past, but the finances, as Romano pointed out, was never feasible.
Besides, do the Reds even need him?!
This is a team who could potentially win the quadruple this season and have already a domestic cup double, with the Premier League possibly following tomorrow if Manchester City drop points at home to Aston Villa.
Liverpool are unbelievably good under Klopp and there’s definitely an argument to be made that despite Mbappe’s quality, he isn’t strictly needed.
