Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo has shared how close he was to joining Manchester United and working under Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

Cody Gakpo moved to Liverpool from Dutch giants PSV in the summer of 2023. The Reds paid an initial £35 million in transfer fees for the forward.

Gakpo has made 12 starts and 13 substitute appearances in the Premier League for Liverpool so far this season. He has scored five goals and given three assists in those games. Trent Alexander-Arnold has been impressed.

The 24-year-old Netherlands international forward has also scored two goals and provided one assist in three starts and one substitute appearance in the UEFA Europa League for the Merseyside club this campaign.

Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo held talks over Manchester United

Gakpo has said that before he moved to Liverpool, he had the chance to join Manchester United and even spoke to manager Erik ten Hag about a possible switch to Old Trafford.

The forward is happy that he did not end up at United, who are struggling to get into the top four of the Premier League table this season.

Sky Sports have reported that United decided to sign Antony instead. The Brazil international winger has struggled, and I think that the Red Devils should sell him in the summer transfer window.

Gakpo told Sky Sports: “It was the summer before. I was in contact with the club and the manager – he’s Dutch so I spoke to him as well.

“At the end of the day it fell through, that’s it, and in the winter Liverpool came. It was the best decision for me.”

My View: Cody Gakpo better off at Liverpool

In my opinion, Cody Gakpo is better off at Liverpool. I do not think that the forward would have flourished at Manchester United.

Liverpool have been successful in recent years. They have won the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League under manager Jurgen Klopp.

Manchester United have struggled since Sir Alex Ferguson retired. They have been stuck in a ‘project phase’ for years now.
