Newcastle United fans on Twitter are absolutely devastated after Callum Wilson picked up an injury against Southampton.
The Magpies lost 2-0 to the Saints at St Mary’s on Friday evening, and to make matters even worse, the Tyneside outfit’s star striker picked up a suspected hamstring problem.
Understadably, fans weren’t best pleased by this news as Wilson has been arguably their best player this season.
Indeed, the summer signing has been on fire since arriving at St James’ Park, netting six goals in eight Premier League appearances.
When you consider that Newcastle have only scored 10 times all season, the seriousness of Wilson’s injury becomes a lot clearer.
Wilson’s fitness becomes an even bigger problem when you factor in the men that will be tasked with replacing him.
Dwight Gayle is still injured, while Andy Carroll really can’t be relied on to lead a line these days due to his long injury history.
That just leaves £40 million signing Joelinton, and his ability has been called into question on more than one occasion.
United fans have been overly pessimistic since hearing this news, with some believing that an injury to Wilson will consign them to relegation.
However, with Steve Bruce’s outfit sitting eight points clear of the relegation zone after eight games, it’s unlikely that this will derail their season to such an extent.
Either way, Wilson will certainly be missed, and we can only hope that his injury won’t keep him out of action for too long.
